This is a shakuhachi inspired painting by the fabulous Bette Alexander. See her work here. http://bettealexander.com/. She’s a fellow student of Ralph Samuelson. It also captures my mood right now as I recently lost my cellphone. I feel a little “in the dark”. Contact me via email until March 9th, when I can upgrade to a new plan without an exorbitant switch fee.
Unique Inlaid Rattan Repair

Another casualty of the 2011 winter. This one came in from Michigan. It was a bit challenging as the inlay had to cut into a beautifully hand painted Kanji without damaging it.
More Winter Cracks

Winter is here. So far, 2011 is proving to be one of the worst in many parts of the country with record blizzards. Please take care of your flutes by carefully storing them in airtight containers and far from indoor heating sources if possible.

The Horizon

With all that’s happening in Egypt now, I thought I’d post this picture of Ellen Stewart and I in Cairo at the foot of the great Pyramids in Giza around 1994.
It’s been about two weeks since Ellen passed away and I am finally able to embrace the future. Ellen, or Mama as us La Mama babies affectionately referred to her as, was my theater mentor. At least that’s what I thought until had time to reflect these past two weeks. It turns out that nearly everything in my present daily life came about as a direct result of my working under her - my best friends, the shakuhachi, my family…all had their genesis with Ellen and her theater.
Ellen Stewart, Off Off Broadway Pioneer, Dies at 91

An angel has left.

Ellen Stewart was a great supporter of world cultures. In 1994, she was awarded the “Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette” by the Emperor of Japan. Her long time resident musicians played the shakuhachi in countless theater productions. This is where I heard the shakuhachi on stage for the first time. My life has never been the same.
Happy New Year 2011!

Happy new year all! 2010 was such a great year for the Yung Flutes and I owe it all to you, my dear friends. Newcomers came from all over with all sorts of question and repairs. Many were text book repairs such as cracks and missing utaguchi inlays but some were quite unique and I learned greatly from them (a deep bow of gratitude to my friends for sharing). And, although I wasn’t producing many new instruments outside of my commissions, I was quite busy in my growth and education on this life long journey with the shakuhachi.
With some major restorations completed, I was able to get some of my bamboo stock out from storage to start on some new commissions.
