Shakuhachi Cracks
Here’s some feedback from one of the repairs this week.
“Perry, Very nice job on the Kitahara…you did such a fine job that I cannot even find the crack anymore! Now that’s first rate repair work! - CTR -Hong Kong

This old Kitahara Seikado came in last week and I only had a window to work on it as the owner was passing through town. Cracks do not always close as well expected since each piece of bamboo is unique. We were happy that this one did. It went so fast I forgot to finish documenting the whole repair. It had both inlay rattan and topical nylon. Because the bamboo was aged, I “antiqued” the inlay by applying a light wash of diluted Japanese urushi lacquer. Sort of like these here:
Yung 1.8 circa 2004

Yokoyama Rampo 1.6 circa 1940’s
I’m lucky to be working in NYC since so many international shakuhachi players travel. If you would like to visit, just drop me an email!
