Beginnings
I received a photo the other day that left me speechless.
I had to show my wife. All she said was "wow".

This is a new shakuhachi community in Texas. I'm extremely proud to have been the maker of many of the instuments seen here.
I had a really tough time through my teenage years. Looking back at it now, I can say with absolute certainty that music helped me through it all. If I accomplish anything at all with the shakuhachi, knowing that I may have helped some young person through some hard times will have made it all worth it.

That is amazing! Very inspiring. I am just now learning (35) and both my daugthers (4 and 6) have a great interest in my simple Yuu model that was recommended to me by Michael Gould, my teacher.
I will show the girls this photo and look into ways to let them try out shakuhachi if they wish (my 4 year old got sound quicker than I by the way!)
Great site...keep up the good work. I look forward to maybe a 1.8 commissioning at some point in my learning!

Hello Perry,
I have been directed to you through an enquiry on a public shakuhachi forum. the enquiry is about how young a child can start to laern the shakuhachi flute. a kind posting directed me to this link.M boy is 6 1/2 years old and I would so love to introduce him to the wonders of the sound this flute holds, rather than traditional (ie contempoarary ) notation and sounds. We live in australia. somehow he has developed an innate fascination with Japan.
any assistance and advice you could offer would be appreciatted. I se from the comment above thet there is a style of flute for young ones. As a digeridoo player myself (20 years - public performances and recorded)my knowledge of this wondrous instrument is limited.
Thankyou in advance,
Lachlan.
