Care for your Shakuhachi

Here is is a great way to store your shakuhachi.
Cut a regular sponge into a 1"X1" square

Moisten the sponge and squeeze out the excess. Make sure it is not dripping wet.

Twist the plastic bag after you place the flute in it. The idea is to create a second chamber to put the sponge in so that not too much moisture is in the same space as the flute.

Keeping it away from the bamboo can prevent mold.

Just twist the bag at both ends and secure it with a rubber band.

With a little care, you can enjoy your flute for a life time, or more.
Namaste, Perry

Nice technique - I will be sure to use that so my flutes don't dry out too much. A result of power outages due to the hurricane gave me the opposite problem with my natural bore flute - no air conditioning = mold. I cleaned it up with very mild bleach and then applied a thin coat of mineral oil, mostly to stave off my paranoia. Applying the oil did reduce the resonant, or 'bambooey' ;-), quality of the instrument a bit though, but it does retain much more of this than my lacquer-bore flutes and remains my favorite to play - the 1.9 completely natural flute.

Love your flutes and listening to the sound clips you post.

Thanks Perry.
