Shakuhachi Root Extreme Makeover
Here is aflute that came back to me because the owner was allergic to the Japanese urushi on the root. At first I felt it was unfortunate since it was such a nice Wabi Sabi root. But I knew it that reworking things on a flute is a part of the craft of shakuhachi making. Whether it is retuning, repairing or an extreme maker over, the process is always magical.

Starting with a little steel wool and elbow grease just to see where it can go.

After a little removal, I'm getting a sense of what it can be.

The shoe polishing technique.

Just a bit more sculpting...

I tell myself all the time, "This is a piece of grass."

In the last picture, it seems as if the post-root node is a bit darker than the rest. If not for the time and effort I'm guessing it took to get the urushi off, I think the slightly darker grain looks quite unique.
